Secretary of State Handel Announces Summer Institute for Educators Secretary of State Karen Handel announces the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust’s 2007 Summer Institute for Educators: Facing History and Ourselves will be held June 17– June 22, 2007 at the University of West Georgia, Carrollton. The Institute is open to Educators K-12 and carries certification credits. The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust is administratively attached to the Secretary of State’s Office. Educators will receive free tuition, books, lodging and meals. The Institute will include Echoes and Reflections, a multimedia curriculum of the Anti-Defamation League. It will cover resources and active teaching methods, lessons for today and teaching strategies the Holocaust and curriculum connections to contemporary issues of diversity, prejudice and bigotry and modern day genocide. Topics include: Society and the Individual: How are one’s decisions influenced by one’s society; the concept of universe of obligation; looking at the roles of bystanders; questions of judgment and responsibility; the rise of the Nazis; anti-Semitism; the legacies of Nuremburg; survivor testimonies and many more.
